What Can Shopify Maintenance Services Include?

Shopify is a hosted platform, so server management is handled by Shopify. Store care focuses on the parts you control: themes, apps, configuration, content and the customer path.

1. Theme and App Updates

We help manage theme and app updates. The process can include review, backup exports, testing and post-update checks so an app or theme conflict does not break the live store.

2. Backup Exports and Version Control

Shopify keeps platform-level backups, but store content and theme changes are best protected with exports and version control. We check backup practices and flag recovery risks within the selected scope.

3. Monitoring and Store Signals

Monitoring can help you see downtime, checkout errors and other signals earlier. Monitoring does not mean a person watches the store every minute.

Website Monitoring Services →

4. Basic Security Maintenance

Security care can include app vetting, update hygiene, basic checks and escalation when suspicious activity appears. No maintenance service can promise a store will never be attacked.

Website Security Services →

5. Checkout and Payment Review

We review checkout and payment paths as part of store care where the plan covers it. High-risk payment testing may need a separate scope.

6. Routine Store Changes

A maintenance plan may include small changes to existing products, collections, content, images, links or settings. New features, major design changes and custom development need a separate scope.

Why a Shopify Store Needs Specialist Maintenance

A Shopify store looks simple, but the moving parts add up: apps, themes, checkout, payments, POS and integrations.

App Conflicts

Too many apps, or one bad update, can slow the store or break layout and checkout. Routine review reduces surprise conflicts.

Checkout and Payment Risk

A broken checkout is lost revenue, and it rarely announces itself. One payment step stops completing and orders simply drop, with no error on screen. Store care should include checkout and payment review at a level matched to the plan.

Theme Update Risk

Theme updates can change layout or break custom code. A defined update process protects the live store.

Performance Drag

Apps and unused code can slow pages. Routine checks help keep the store respondng well for customers.

Content Drift

Products, collections and settings change often. A clear support path keeps small changes moving.

Integration Dependencies

ERP, email, fulfillment and review tools connect to the store. Maintenance should understand those dependencies.

How Shopify Ships Changes, and What Was Retired

Shopify is a hosted platform, so you never patch the core — Shopify updates it for you. That moves the maintenance question from “when do we upgrade?” to “what changed underneath us, and does our theme, app or checkout still work?”

How the platform changes

  • Shopify releases platform changes on its own schedule. There is no version number for you to upgrade
  • Twice a year, Shopify Editions bundles bigger platform changes that can touch themes, apps and checkout
  • Shopify API versions are released quarterly and retired on a published schedule — apps that were never updated can stop working

What was retired on checkout

  • Checkout customisation has moved to Checkout Extensibility
  • The legacy checkout.liquid layout and additional scripts were retired for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025
  • Legacy Script tags were retired for Plus stores on the same date, and for other plans on August 26, 2026
  • A store still relying on that old customisation needs its checkout logic rebuilt as extensions

We do not control Shopify’s release schedule, and we cannot make a platform change risk-free. What we can do is check the store after each change, before your customers notice.

Shopify-Specific Risks and Where Your Hours Go

On a hosted platform the risk rarely comes from the core. It comes from what you installed on top of it, and from assumptions baked into the theme.

App update conflicts

An app updates itself and the store layout, speed or checkout changes with it. Nobody sent you a ticket.

Theme assumptions

Theme updates can overwrite customisations made in sections and templates, and the storefront quietly reverts.

Checkout customisation gaps

Legacy checkout scripts no longer run. Custom logic built the old way stops applying, and orders arrive without it.

Platform work and your included hours

The monthly fee covers defined maintenance within your plan’s included hours. The tasks below are the ones that come up specifically on Shopify.

Typically inside your included hours

  • Reviewing app and theme updates before they reach the live store
  • Checking the checkout and payment path after a change
  • Verifying exports and version control for theme changes
  • Small changes to products, collections, content and settings

Usually a separate scope

  • Rebuilding checkout logic as Checkout Extensibility extensions
  • Replacing or developing a custom app
  • POS or new sales-channel setup
  • Migration from another platform

These are release and support facts published by the platform vendor, not commitments from us. Scope is confirmed in your plan before work starts, and anything outside it is quoted separately first.

Know What Ongoing Shopify Maintenance Covers

A good maintenance service sets clear boundaries. This protects the store and keeps requests moving.

Usually Part of Ongoing Maintenance

  • Theme and app update review
  • Backup exports and version checks
  • Monitoring review
  • Basic security maintenance
  • Checkout and payment path review (plan level)
  • Routine store changes
  • Issue intake and troubleshooting
  • Maintenance records and reports

Usually Needs a Separate Scope

  • Store redesign
  • Custom app or theme development
  • New sales channels or POS setup
  • Migration from another platform
  • Malware removal and incident recovery
  • Large product or content entry projects
  • SEO campaigns, advertising or content marketing
  • Third-party license or app subscription fees

Important: Shopify maintenance does not mean unlimited development. We confirm the plan scope before work starts. You can request a separate quote when the work falls outside that scope.

Included Work Hours per Month

The monthly fee covers defined maintenance within the included hours below. Work beyond the included hours is billed at the agreed overage rate or handled by upgrading the plan.

Store Starter

Up to 2 hours of included maintenance per month.

Store Growth

Up to 4 hours of included maintenance per month.

Store Premium

  • Monitoring review
  • Routine store changes
  • Up to 2 included hours / month

Store Growth

Why Contract-Accountable Maintenance

Some providers lead with “no contract, cancel anytime.” That convenience usually comes with low accountability: when something goes wrong, there is no agreed standard for who responds, how fast, and to what quality.

We use a clear initial term, monthly renewal, and a defined notice period. That structure is what lets us commit to an SLA, response times, and a party you can hold to account. For a site that matters to your business, accountability is part of the service — not a restriction.

What You Actually Pay For: Real Engineering Hours, Not a Task Queue

Some plans advertise “unlimited small changes (up to 30 minutes each).” That is a capped task queue, not real capacity — and it limits the depth of work that gets done.

Plans advertised as “unlimited”

  • “Unlimited” small changes, each capped at about 30 minutes
  • Updates often pushed straight to the live site
  • Little stated SLA or accountability
  • Hard to tell what is truly included

Our Shopify plans

  • Defined monthly engineering hours — 2 hours (Starter), 4 hours (Growth), 8 hours (Premium)
  • Changes staged and verified before production
  • SLA-backed response and a contract you can reference
  • Transparent overage at $99/hour, or upgrade the plan

You always know what is covered. Work beyond the included hours is billed transparently or handled by moving up a plan — no illusion of “unlimited.”

How Your Included Hours Are Counted

No guesswork and no hidden math. Your included hours cover hands-on engineering time only. Automated updates, backups, monitoring, and scans never draw down your allowance — they run in the background as part of the service.

A credit is a billing unit for the accountable result we deliver — verified, senior-reviewed, and covered by our SLA — not a stopwatch reading. AI lets us complete routine work far faster, and that efficiency is exactly what keeps our rates competitive. It never removes the human judgment or the responsibility behind a change.

Content and image updatesAutomated updates, backups, monitoring, and scans
Code and template tweaksRoutine consultation and planning discussions
Troubleshooting and incident handlingRework caused by our own error

Standard task credits

Common requests have a predefined credit, so there is nothing to negotiate after the fact.

Style or copy tweak0.25 hNo structural change
Page structure change (add, remove, or reorder modules)0.75 hExcludes new page build

Data export or report output0.5 hStandard format
Security incident response (triage, isolation, and stop-loss)2.0 h (cap)First-response containment only; malware removal and full cleanup are a separate scope, quoted first
Third-party integration changefrom 1.5 hAssessed first; complex work goes to a scope of work

AI-readiness and structured-data upkeepfrom 0.75 hVisibility and structured data

Security incidents are handled up to a 2.0 h standard credit; larger recovery work is quoted before we proceed. Credits are tracked in 15-minute increments. As a courtesy, minor changes that take only a few minutes (roughly 10–15 minutes, up to twice a month) are absorbed at no charge — you are not billed a full credit for a one-line fix. Work beyond your included hours is billed at $99/hour or handled by moving up a plan. Each month you receive a simple usage ledger — tasks, credits used, and your remaining balance — alongside your maintenance report.

Silent Failures Are What We Catch

A site that goes down is obvious. The failures that cost the most are the quiet ones. A contact form stops sending. A checkout breaks for one payment method. Pages quietly drop out of search. Speed slips a little every week. Nothing crashes, so nothing shouts — the leads just stop.

That is the failure mode we watch for. Alongside uptime, we monitor the signals that go silent:

Form submissions

We test that your forms still reach their destination, so a broken contact or quote form does not sit unnoticed for weeks.

Checkout and orders

For stores, we watch the order path and flag signs that a payment step has stopped completing.

Search indexing

We check that your pages stay indexed, and that nothing is accidentally blocked from search after a change.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

We track real performance over time and flag gradual decline before it starts costing you conversions.

Detection coverage by quiet failure type Automated detection covers roughly 80 to 90 percent of form, checkout, indexing and speed monitoring. The remaining share — diagnosis and the fix — is done by a person. Contact forms 90% Checkout & orders 80% Search indexing 85% Speed & Core Web Vitals 85% Automated detection Human judgment
Detection runs automatically and continuously. The judgment and the fix are done by a person — and reported to you.

And You Hear About It Every Month

A maintenance plan should not be a silent invoice. Every month you receive a short report: what we updated and checked, what monitoring caught, what we fixed, and how much of your included hours were used. If nothing went wrong, the report still tells you what was verified — so “nothing happened” shows up as visible work, not silence.

You Own Your Site. Always.

Your domain, your hosting account, and your code belong to you. A maintenance provider should never be the only one holding the keys.

Your assets stay in your name

Domain, hosting, and site files remain yours and under your control. We work with your access — we do not take ownership of it.

A clean handover if you leave

If you move on, the agreement sets out how access, files, and credentials are returned. We do not hold your domain, and we do not charge a release fee.

This is written into our agreement, not just promised on a page.

How We Deliver: Staging → Senior Review → Production

We do not blind-push updates to your live site. Routine changes move through staging, a senior review, then production — with SLA-backed response times. This is our standard, not a premium add-on.

Staging first

Updates and changes are verified in a staging environment before they reach visitors.

Senior review

Changes are checked by experienced engineers, not just an automated script.

SLA-backed

Response commitments are defined in the agreement, so expectations are clear.

AI-Assisted, Human-Accountable

We use AI tools to compress routine work, which helps us keep a competitive rate. But accountability for critical and complex changes stays with a human engineer. AI raises the floor — it does not remove responsibility.

Our Maintenance Model Fits You If…

A good fit

  • Your website is tied to revenue — ecommerce, lead generation, or membership
  • You run more than one platform and want one accountable vendor
  • You have been affected by a broken site or a provider that disappeared
  • You want a defined SLA and a party you can hold to account
  • You need changes verified in staging, not pushed blindly to production

Not the best fit

  • Your main priority is the lowest possible price and you accept the risk
  • You run a small single-page brochure site with little traffic
  • You prefer to manage updates and changes yourself
  • You need “unlimited everything” with no scope boundary
  • You are looking for a one-time project (that is a separate scoped engagement)
  • You want service with no contract or commitment at all

Run more than one platform? We can cover your other sites under one contract, billed per site with a multi-site discount — not one price for every platform.

Our Commitments to You

Annual prepay flexibility

If you prepay annually and cancel within 30 days, we refund the unused difference. (Per our stated terms.)

Setup fee protection

If a setup or onboarding fee applies and you cancel before work starts, it is fully refunded within 7 days. (Per our stated terms.)

Is Shopify Maintenance Right for Your Store?

Good Fit

  • Shopify stores that need ongoing technical care
  • Stores with several apps and regular changes
  • Small teams without an in-house store tech
  • Stores with recurring updates, checks and support requests

Assessment Required

  • Heavily customized checkout or theme
  • Many third-party integrations
  • POS or multi-location setup
  • Active malware or a current breach
  • Major performance or conversion problems

Not the Right Starting Point

  • A brand-new store from scratch
  • A full redesign
  • A one-time migration from another platform
  • Urgent hacked-store cleanup
  • Custom app development only

If you only need a redesign, one-time migration, urgent cleanup or custom app development, choose another path: Redesign · Ecommerce Migration · Malware Removal · Emergency Support

What Affects Shopify Maintenance Pricing?

Pricing depends on the store and the work required. The main factors can include:

  • Number of apps and integrations
  • Theme complexity and custom code
  • Store size and catalog volume
  • Update and compatibility risk
  • Checkout and payment review needs
  • Maintenance frequency
  • Support scope and response needs
  • Requested changes and reporting needs

A simple store may fit a standard plan. A complex store may need an assessment and custom scope. Plan prices are listed above and reflect standard store scopes; this page does not invent price ranges.

Shopify Maintenance Services FAQ

What does Shopify maintenance include?

Shopify maintenance can include theme and app updates, backup exports, monitoring, basic security checks, checkout and payment review, and small store changes. The final scope depends on the store and selected plan.

Do you manage Shopify apps and theme updates?

Yes. App and theme updates are a routine part of Shopify care. We review changes in a safe way and check the store after updates so the live store is not broken by a conflict.

Can you back up a Shopify store?

Shopify keeps platform-level backups, but store content, theme and configuration changes are best protected with exports and version control. We include backup checks and export practices within the selected plan scope.

Do you test checkout and payments?

We review checkout and payment paths as part of store care where the plan covers it. We do not promise that every payment edge case is tested continuously; high-risk payment work may need a separate scope.

Can a Shopify plan include content or product changes?

A plan may include small changes to existing content, images, products, collections, links or settings. The plan must define available time and request limits. New features and major design work need a separate scope.

What happens if the store is hacked or broken?

Use the emergency or malware-removal path. We first assess the incident. The initial response (assessment, isolation, and stop-loss) is handled within the included hours of your plan; malware removal, full cleanup, and recovery are a separate scope, quoted before we proceed.

How much does Shopify maintenance cost?

Standard plans are Store Starter $129/mo, Store Growth $249/mo and Store Premium $449/mo. The price reflects defined monthly maintenance within the included hours for each plan. The exact scope is confirmed after a brief store assessment, and work beyond included hours is billed at the agreed overage rate.

How do I get started?

Send the store URL and a short note about current needs. We review the request and discuss the right starting point.

Why are your plans priced higher than some providers?

We are not the lowest-priced option, and we do not compete on the lowest tier. Our price covers real engineering hours, staging-verified changes, an SLA and a contract you can hold us to. If your main priority is the lowest possible price, a budget plan may fit better — we are built for sites where accountability matters.

Do you use AI in your maintenance work?

Yes. We use AI tools to compress routine work so we can keep a competitive rate. For critical and complex changes, a human engineer stays accountable. AI helps us work faster; it does not replace responsibility.

How is multi-platform maintenance priced?

Each site or platform is covered by its own plan, billed per site. If you run more than one property, we can consolidate them under one contract with a multi-site discount. We do not charge one price to cover every platform — each property gets the care its scope needs.
